Bi-Weekly Highlights (27/06/2010)

Had a couple of heavy weeks so I didn’t have chance to upload the highlights last week, so here are a few pictures for the past two weeks, starting with the Mela festival in Glasgow on the 19th of June.

Mela Festival

The following week I was buried in work, didn’t have time to go out taking photos, however, this last weekend was quite fun. I watched a friend play live at a garden party, afterwards I took a stroll through the city centre. The following picture is of a band that plays there on Saturdays, I really love it. Traditional Scottish bagpipe music with drums and madness:

Weekly Highlights (13/06/2010)

It was raining quite a lot at the start of the week. Fortunately it cleared by the weekend and I took a trip to the north of England.

This is a photo from about Tuesday while waiting for the bus to go to work:

On Friday I went to Carlisle for a few hours, and visited a few places around the railway station:

Then I boarded the next train to Newcastle. At around 10:30 PM the sun started setting providing beautiful picturesque scenery. Unfortunately my camera was not able to capture even a tenth of the feeling, but a little is better than nothing:

Train from Carlisle to Newcastle

I arrived at Newcastle where I spent the night at a hotel on Dean St. Not without going for a drink or two with some mates I knew through the internet from over 10 years ago, finally meeting them in real life. I left Newcastle at 7 AM to go to Middlesbrough. The following picture was taken on the train while leaving Newcastle:

At Middlesbrough I merely made a minute’s stop, then took a taxi to Guisborough. Nice little town it is:

Finally I made my way back to M’bro at 2:30 PM, and watched the game (Argentina-Nigeria) in a really interesting pub. It was decorated with incredibly old furniture (really comfortable by the way) and all the TV flat-screens were lined with picture frames. It had old-school wallpaper from the 20s-30s, and wooden floor that seemed at least fifty years old. A rather interesting place to watch the match:

So then I headed back to Glasgow finally. It was a great weekend for taking pictures, you can see more of them on my flickr stream.

Review: Pancho Villas, Glasgow

Today I paid a visit to Pancho Villas in Merchant City, Glasgow, Scotland for a nice lunch. I would like to give a few of my thoughts on the place as a “Mexican” restaurant in Glasgow. The style was very Mexican, all the staff seemed to be Scottish however, but the ambience was captured in quite a stylish 20′s Mexican style. The façade, from both outside and inside was quite nice and spacious:

I ordered a Negra Modelo beer, and tacos de barbacoa. While I waited, they brought me traditional totopos with sauce. The sauce was mild in comparison to traditional Mexican red sauce, however, it was quite tasty.

Totopos

Finally the food arrived. 2 well-stuffed barbacoa tacos in corn-flour tortillas. The taste of the tortillas was, I’d say, 75% authentic at least. It had 2 kinds of red sauce, lemons, onion and coriander. The taste of the tacos was impressively good, they had a strong beefy taste. The sauce wasn’t bad either. However, the rice wasn’t that great. It was lacking a lot of flavour in comparison to the traditional red Mexican rice. Overall the meal was great, but the price was 11 times what you would pay for the same in a Mexican restaurant. I’d recommend it, however, if you live in Glasgow and are in search for something mildly similar to real Mexican food.

Weekly Highlights (16/05/2010)

Last week was a productive one. Lots of work was done, a few things were bought, and a few places were visited. Lately I haven’t been reading that much on the bus. Instead, I’ve been taking a few pictures, trying to get good angles, good views, and interesting focuses. Kind of like the next one:

Circles and landscapes

So on Saturday I went to the city centre to look for a place to scan a few documents. I found none and had to resort to taking pictures of the documents, which surprisingly came out passable enough. While I was in the city centre I stumbled upon the following group at Bucchanan street. They played awesomely well, a bagpiper and three drummers.

I also happened to be looking for a skateboard. I couldn’t find the shop I had searched for on internet, so I kept on walking until I saw a guy unpacking a new skateboard. I asked him where he got it, he told me that at Argos. I dashed to Argos and got myself a new skateboard. Provides good fun on the way to work and back. Not to mention it saves a bit of time as well.

Weekly Highlights (09/05/2010)

I came back from Belgium on Tuesday and from there on I had a pretty standard week. I went to the city centre, however, yesterday afternoon, and took a few rather interesting pictures of the people from Glasgow. Enjoy the pictures!
